Avul Pakir Jainulabidin Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu in a Muslim family. His father Zainulabidin was a sailor and his mother Ashiamma was a housewife. His family's financial condition was not good, so he had to work from a young age. To help his father financially, Kalam used to do newspaper distribution work after school. अवुल पकिर जैनुलअबिदीन अब्दुल कलाम का जन्म 15 अक्टूबर 1931 को तमिलनाडु के रामेश्वरम में एक मुसलमान परिवार मैं हुआ। उनके पिता जैनुलअबिदीन एक नाविक थे और उनकी माता अशिअम्मा एक गृहणी थीं। उनके परिवार की आर्थिक स्थिति ठीक नहीं थे इसलिए उन्हें छोटी उम्र से ही काम करना पड़ा। अपने पिता की आर्थिक मदद के लिए बालक कलाम स्कूल के बाद समाचार पत्र वितरण का कार्य करते थे। अपने स्कूल के दिनों में कलाम पढाई-लिखाई में सामान्य थे पर नयी चीज़ सीखने के लिए हमेशा तत्पर और तैयार रहते थे।

उनके अन्दर सीखने की भूख थी और वो पढाई पर घंटो ध्यान देते थे। उन्होंने अपनी स्कूल की पढाई रामनाथपुरम स्च्वार्त्ज़ मैट्रिकुलेशन स्कूल से पूरी की और उसके बाद तिरूचिरापल्ली के सेंट जोसेफ्स कॉलेज में दाखिला लिया, जहाँ से उन्होंने सन 1954 में भौतिक विज्ञान में स्नातक किया। उसके बाद वर्ष 1955 में वो मद्रास चले गए जहाँ से उन्होंने एयरोस्पेस इंजीनियरिंग की शिक्षा ग्रहण की। वर्ष 1960 में कलाम ने मद्रास इंस्टिट्यूट ऑफ़ टेक्नोलॉजी से इंजीनियरिंग की पढाई पूरी की।
